Desktopi paraqet nivelin bazë prej ku edhe fillon puna e mëtutjeshme e kompjuterit. Në desktop gjejmë ikona të cilat mund të jenë ikona standarde (të krijuara me instalimin e Windows-it) ose ikona të krijuara nga shfrytëzuesit. Disa nga ikonat standarde janë:● My Computer (kompjuteri im) kjo ikonë paraqet një dritare prej ku mund të kemi qasje në njësitë për disqe, njësinë për disket, tabelën për rregullimin e parametrave (Control Panel), rnbykqirjen e printerëve të instaluar, etj.● My Documents (dokumentet e mia) kjo ikonë paraqet folderin e dokumenteve të arkivuara. Me hapjen e kësaj ikone shihen të gjitha dokumentet e juaja të ruajtura në këtë folder.● Recycle Bin (shporta) kjo ikonë paraqet përmbajtjen e fasiklës(folder-it) Recycled në të cilën vendosen sendet të cilat i fshijmë gjatë punës. Kështu sendet të cilat i fshijë nuk fshihen menjëher edhe fizikisht por së pari shkojnë në fasiklën Recycled. Prej dritares së ikonës Recycle Bin sendet e fshiera mund t'i fshijmë përgjithmonë (fshirje fizike) ose t'i kthejmë në vendin ku kanë qenë.● My Network Place - Me startimin e kësaj ikone do të paraqitet dritarja me listen e të gjithë kompjuterëve dhe paisjeve tjera të kyçur në rrjetin tonë dhe prej kësaj dritare mund të qasemi në memorjet e jashtme të kompjuterëve tjerë si dhe të shfrytëzojmë paisjet e përbashkëta. Nëse punojmë në versionin Windows 2000 atëherë në këtë dritare do të gjejmë ikonat ( Entire Network dhe Computers Near Me) që mundësojnë paraqitjen e listës së kompjuterëve të kyçur në rrjetin tonë. Gjithashtu këtu e gjejmë edhe ikonën Add Network Place e cila na paraqet dritaren komunikuese ku mund të definojmë shtegun për shfrytëzimin e ndonjë fasikle të përbashkët (të ndarë, share) në rrjetin kompjuterik.● Internet Explorer (hulumtuesi i Internetit) kjo ikonë paraqet hulumtuesin e Internetit. Me hapjen e kësaj ikone shfaqet dritarja nga mund të hyni në Internet dhe bredhni nëpër të.- Në desktop ekzistojnë edhe ikona të tjera të cilat mund të meren si standarde si p.sh Briefcase, Connect to Internet dhe të tjera por këta janë më pak të rëndësishme.● Briefcase (valixhe e vogël, çantë (për dokumente)) paraqet folderin me dokumente që ruhen në kompjuterin tuaj në shtëpi apo punë dhe kompjuterin Notebook apo Laptop dhe shërben për sinkronizimin e këtyre dokumenteve.● Connect to Internet (lidhu në internet) kjo ikonë paraqet kornizën për dialog me ndihmën e të cilës mund të lidheni në Internet. Këtë ikonë e krijoni vet.- Përveç ikonave në Desktop gjejmë edhe shiritnin e detyrave ( TaskBar).- Në të majtë të Taskbar-it gjendet susta Start e cila aktivizon menynë start prej ku mund të startohen aplikacionet dhe të thiren dokumentet.* * *desktop -
